bktsigep wrote a new post, Alice A. Dunnigan – Writing her way to the White House 10 years, 1 month ago

Thumbnail Throughout history in order to make change possible, one person has historically sparked that change. Alice A. Dunnigan was a woman from Kentucky who did just that, make change in the journalism industry. Alice A. Dunnigan became the first African American to receive White House credentials and was reporting on the highest levels of government business. Before […]

bktsigep wrote a new post, Josephine Henry; dedicated activist 10 years, 1 month ago

From her earliest days Josephine Henry worked for human rights, especially for women. One of her goals was to get the state of Kentucky to recognize women as their own person once they were married. In 1890 Kentucky was the only state left in the United States where a married women had no right to own […]

Thumbnail William English Walling was extremely active in the creation and beginning of several groups whose target was to bring women’s rights to the forefront of the nation’s stage. He was a firm believer in equality for all races and genders and showed his willingness to participate in activism designed to spread these ideas to […]

thanks for the post, measha! until reading your post i had never heard about this act either. its good to know that Kentucky was so progressive in the 1960’s, its just unfortunate we dont learn about this in middle or high school.

Originally established at the University of Kentucky in 1979, the Kentucky Women Writers Conference has aimed to bring up and coming talented young women writers to the University and is held to showcase their talents.  The inaugural year of this fine organization consisted of a plethora of fine authors in Maya Angelou, Toni Cade Bambara, […]

Reverend Jones obviously did many great things for the black community in this city. It is not surprising that he was buried in a cemetery traditionally against burying black people, since he was such a progressive activist.

Harriette Simpson Arnow (born in 1908 under the name Harriette Louisa Simpson), started her young life in the southern Kentucky area of Pulaski County. Although Harriette’s true passion was always to become a teacher, she would ultimately become a very successful writer when it was all said and done. After spending a couple of years at […]

I also find this story heartwarming and moving. Learning of new people from the area who were able to simultaneously break down gender and race barriers really inspires me to also do something great.

Because of great citizens like Ora Porter many more people in today’s society are able to get jobs once thought impossible. Ms. Porter single handedly made it possible for my mother to get her nursing job in Owensboro!

bktsigep wrote a new post, Breaking Grounds in the Media 10 years, 3 months ago

When pondering for ideas of which Kentucky born female activists to write this journal entry about, it became clear very soon that I wanted to honor someone for accomplishing not only a “different” feat, but something that was done for the first time. Someone who will forever be known for breaking down the barriers that […]

bktsigep commented on the post, Wayne County Author Impacts 20th Century Female Progression 10 years, 3 months ago

It’s nice to learn about brave, progressive women from yesteryear through this website. All seem to contribute in their own individual way, and I like the fact that all the way back in the 1920’s or 1930’s when she went to Berea, Harriette broke social norms by not conforming to the strict rules!

This seems to happen time and time again throughout history. I’m just glad to see firsthand through this class how women like Ms. Balch were able to change this problem and gain the recognition they deserve. Thank you Emily Greene Balch!

I myself am finding it hard to imagine that the adults were acting so childish and setting such bad examples for these kids. Obviously, if a child see’s their parent or any other adult doing something like this, they tend to emulate their actions because that’s what they are lead to believe is “right”.
