As a young adult and teenager, Collins participated in many pageants. From these pageants she gained poise, public speaking skills, and presence. In 1954 she was the Shelby County Tobacco Festival Queen. When she became governor of Kentucky, she proved to naysayers that she was more than just a beauty queen, using skills she gained from being on stage in her speeches and presentations to the public.
