Although Collins’ time as governor was not during our focus time, we did do some research into her political career. Her initial experience with politics came when she worked on Wendell Ford’s gubernatorial campaign in 1971. In 1972 she worked on Walter Huddleston campaign for the United States Senate. Collins was chosen as secretary of Kentucky’s Democratic Party and was also elected as a clerk of the Court of Appeals. She continued to climb in her political career through lieutenant governor in 1979 and then finally, in 1983 Collins beat Republican Jim Bunning for Kentucky governor.
