Smith & Smith Funeral Home opened in 1956.  The owner was John W. Smith who also owned the Smith-Jackson Funeral Home of Danville and the Smith Funeral Homes of Frankfort and Nicholasville. John Smith, a native of Nicholasville, Kentucky attended Atlanta University High School and then the Morehouse College of Embalming.  He married Evelyn Truitt of Atlanta in 1939 and got his start in Danville with Ashby Jackson at his funeral home.  When Smith passed away (see “Funeral Director John W Smith Dies.” Lexington Herald Leader, April 25, 1987: A-8 ), his son Michael M. Smith of Danville became the owner of the funeral home.  Omer Cowherd is the current Funeral Director.

The business opened in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement and integration and has been viable ever since. Smith and Smith has seen the many changes in the neighborhood throughout the years following integration.
